GetLines
FileTools
Description
Read specific line ranges from files! GetLines enables memory-efficient work with large files by selectively reading only the lines you need - perfect for log analysis and large text files.
With optional start and end line parameters, you can extract precise excerpts without having to load the entire file into memory. Ideal for "tail"-like operations and targeted file inspection.
Why This Tool Stands Out
- Partial Reading targeted
- Memory-Efficient even with GB-sized files
- Log Tailing supported
- Large Files no problem
Perfect for:
System administrators who analyze log files; developers who process large text files; support teams who investigate error logs; and anyone who needs to work efficiently with large files. Ideal for log monitoring and data evaluation.
Workflow support; time savings depend on the task
Instead of opening huge files and scrolling, read only the relevant lines - saves memory and time, especially with log files several GB in size.
JSON Parameters
- filePath REQUIRED (String)The path of the file. Example: "C:\\Logs\\application.log"
- startLine OPTIONAL (Integer)The first line to read (1-based). If not specified, reading starts at line 1.
- endLine OPTIONAL (Integer)The last line to read. If not specified, reading continues to the end.

"startLine": 1000,
"endLine": 1050
}
}
Return Values
The tool returns an object with the following properties:
- lines (Array)
Array of the lines read, as strings - lineCount (Integer)
Number of lines returned - startLine (Integer)
Actual start line (1-based) - endLine (Integer)
Actual end line - totalLines (Integer)
Total number of lines in the file - filePath (String)
Path of the file that was read
Example Usage
Step-by-step guide:
- Specify the path of the file you want to read
- Define the start line (e.g., the last 100 lines: totalLines-99)
